A Place to be with Amigos!
by Zuri

If you find yourself in Nagoya looking for something international to eat, your best bet is to take the subway to Sakae. On our most recent JALT excursion to Nagoya, we found ourselves at a nice Mexican restaurant about five minutes from Sakae Station. From its outward appearance, it seemed quite nice, decorative, and has a good atmosphere. After all, you can’t go wrong with a place where there are young women talking, drinking, eating, and laughing. This is the scene at Sakae’s Bar Mexigan. The place resembles a sports bar since it has two televisions showing random sports events, usually European soccer. Also, like a traditional bar, you pay as you order, so everyone pays for what they drink and don’t have to split costs, unless you are sharing.

Drinks!
Since the establishment’s name has the word bar in it, you would expect it to have many different kinds of alcohol, and they do. About 90% of the menu was completely dedicated to various kinds of liquor, mainly cocktails. It also had a small variety of Mexican beers such as Corona and Tecate. If you are interested in drinking a lot at Bar Mexigan, my suggestion would be to do it before 7:00pm. From open (5:30pm) to 7:00pm is Amigo Hour. During this time, you can enjoy cocktails at 50% off, other beverages (including beer) at 20% off, and Kirin Ichiban Shibori at 5% off. Why only 5% off for Kirin Ichiban? This drinker has no clue, but as long as it gets me drunk, no problem.
Probably one of the most interesting drinks that I had on the relatively cool Sunday evening was the mango beer. The flavor was quite interesting and it was simple to make. Though most of it was just mango juice, the beer did provide a nice little kick to it. For all you mojito lovers out there, the mojitos at Bar Mexigan are quite delicious. If you are feeling a little adventurous, you should try the mango mojito. It’s a bit different, but gets the job done. Finally, my last drink suggestion would be the pina colada. It’s not the typical frozen drink that we were used to but the taste is quite good. If you do order this drink, please be advised that you will probably be waiting at least 10 minutes or more for it if there are a lot of customers. Also, the pina colada is one of the most expensive drinks at Bar Mexigan, but if you go during Amigo Hour, you will be paying only ¥490 for this monster drink.

Food!
I’m pretty sure that all the drinking at Bar Mexigan will make you hungry, so if you look at the last 10% of the menu, you will find food. The food here is what you would expect from your average American Mexican restaurant. It is more of a Tex-Mex style, but the food will not disappoint. The food ranges from about ¥400~¥1000 and includes some traditional favorites like tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and nachos. Probably the most popular dish amongst us was the quesadillas. Just about everyone ordered them, and liked them. I myself ordered a taco meat burrito and chili cheese nachos. I enjoyed every bite of each dish, but the portions were a little bit small. Besides that, they may not beat out Gato Rojo in Fujieda, but for a good time out with friends and coworkers, it’s a great place to go and kick back.

Japanese Test
December is almost here and that means that it’s time for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test! WOO!! This year the test is on December 5th. Here’s a big 頑張って(がんばって) to everyone challenging their 日本語, myself included.!
これはなんですか?

Recently I bought a fancy DSLR camera and I have been having fun taking pictures of stuff in my apartment. So here is an idea for a new contest: similar to the What the Heck is That? In the Japan Times, I will include a picture of something Japanese and the first person to email with the correct name of the item in Japanese wins a prize!
The first item should be pretty easy…

Cool Link!
My father sent me this cool link. It’s a portal to YouTube videos about different cities around the world. Check it out to see if your hometown is included. For those of you with computers in your offices it might be fun to show members where you’re from. http://www.jcdurand.ca/Monde/Tour.html
The official video for Regina was pretty good. Makes me wonder why I left (oh right, -40o).

P.S. I will be coming up to Susono after the Japanese test to get ready for my week at WHQ1. So, if anyone wants to go out for (buy me) a beer, I won’t say no!
