2007 - What Happened Again!?

Another year has come and gone leaving most of us with the feeling of where did the time go and how did I forget it so quickly.  So here’s a little recap for those of you who are like me and don’t remember what happened last week much less last January.

January  David “Becks” Beckham signs with the Los Angeles Galaxy.  Apple introduces the iPhone.  Neither make a big impact.

February  NASA astro “nut” Lisa Nowalk is arrested for an attempted abduction of a romantic rival.  FIA has an All Company Meeting at Kusatsu Onsen in Gunma which is well worth mentioning. Anna Nicole Smith passes away, Britney shaves her  head, Paris goes to jail, AND

March  Lindsay goes to rehab..  And I know, why mention it?

April  A shocking and quite horrible massacre at Virginia Tech University by a very disturbed young man.  Don Imus suspended from MSNBC radio for racial slurs, apologizes, and he’s back.

May  Madeline McCann disappears from a resort hotel room in Portugal and is still missing.  Her parents have been named as suspects.

June “The Sopranos” end a ten year run with a “controversial” final episode.  Tony Blair steps down after a decade in office.  Chris has another birthday.

July  The final Harry Potter book is released at midnight in London and sells about twenty-teen jillion copies worldwide.

August  A bridge spanning the Mississippi River in Minnesota collapses killing thirteen.  Barry Bonds breaks a record which requires an asterisk.

September  Monks protesting in Myanmar, are beaten, shot, and arrested. A  Japanese reporter is also killed. OJ arrested... again. Aqua Dots, a toy for children made in China, is recalled because it contains the drug ecstasy.

October  Southern California wildfires destroy thousands of homes.  Al Gore wins a Nobel Peace Prize. Radiohead releases their new album directly to the internet on a “pay as you feel” basis.  I don’t think that will happen again.

November  Hollywood writers go on strike and Broadway stagehands soon follow . Millions of viewers were shocked to discover TV shows are written.

December  Larry leaves, Santa comes, and you start to wonder if this really is just a coincidence….?

Last Interview with Larry

img3What was your first impression when flying over Japan into Narita airport?
Green and bumpy, kinda like broccoli.img2

What’s your favorite Japanese word(s)?
Gomen nasai and Wakaranai, usually used simultaneously in most any conversation with a Japanese person.

Favorite expression?
Hisashiburi goki buri, though no Japanese people actually ever say this.

Favorite food?
Anything niku.  No big surprise here.img4

Least favorite food?
Uni.  Hate it with the white hot intensity of a thousand suns.  It’s just not right.

Who is your favorite actor or talentos?
Talento is definitely Waka Inoue.  She’s got lips like large silky pillows.  As for actors, that would be Ken Watanabe and Ken Takakura.

img5Where is your favorite place in Japan?
There are more than one.  Nagasaki and Miyajima top the list though.  Nagasaki because it’s such a beautiful city with lots of places to sit and relax while  enjoying the scenery.  Miyajima in the fall with the deer and maple tree leaves changing colors is something worth seeing.

What is your most surprising favorite Japanese food?
This is a tie between Natto pizza and Basashi.  I have to say I am more surprised with the Natto pizza choice.  After all Basashi is niku, be it raw and HORSE.

What is something you wish you would have done?
Met Waka Inoue is first on the list.  Actually, one thing is not making it to Okinawa to visit the new aquarium there.  And a whole lot more…..

And finally, what’s your most embarrassing moment in Japan?
Every time I step out of my front door.

Leaving Larry: An Ode

I got some extra shirts in my backpack
I got at least five
That should last me until late this afternoon
Yeah I ------
Sweat – like I am in a contest
Like my life depends on it
Why can't summer in Susono be
Inside COSTCO where the air is cool
And, out of the corner of your eye,
You can see red meat in provocative displays
And where the blenders pulverize
Strawberries so elegantly?
I am leaving Japan
Images scurry though my mind
Kimono, white feet in getta – clack, clack
Crazy wide pants on construction workers,
I hear Iwanami....Iwanami desu
When I close my eyes to sleep
But, you know,  I feel like my plate is full of butter chicken
Like I will never eat another vegetable
Like I can't lose
And like I'll see my friends soon
In new places
